Meet Abigail! Abigail is a Stability travel nurse currently working in St. Louis, Missouri. Keep reading for her advice on the one thing she always packs to make her placements feel more like home.

What is your current specialty and placement?

Med-surg/neuro; St. Louis, MO

What is your favorite part of travel nursing?

My favorite part of travel nursing is the opportunity to see different parts of the county and being able to care for the patient population that lives there. It’s been such a great learning experience so far and I’m excited to keep going.

What is a place on your bucket list for a travel nursing job?

Seattle, WA. I have lived in Texas my whole life so that’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go!

How did you become a travel nurse?

I “graduated” in May of 2020, of course, I did not get a real graduation or the last semester of nursing school I was expecting. I got hired as a new grad at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX on a COVID floor. It was terrifying but also such a blessing now that I get to look back on it. During my orientation, our floor transitioned into a “hybrid” unit where we had both COVID and med-surg patients so my orientation was extended to include this as well. I learned SO much but specifically, which patients to prioritize and time management. Over my first year of nursing as a staff nurse, going back and forth between COVID and med-surg with all the shifting policies, I began to get really burnt out. Texas also had a blizzard during this where I was on the floor for 8 days straight! I felt that I needed a change, and also felt very confident in being a nurse given all the changes and challenges during my first year. I found stability through the NurselifeRN Instagram page – and now I’m a travel nurse!

Have you found any sort of community while travel nursing?

On my first assignment, 90% of the nurses were fellow travelers. We all got super close!

What are some of your favorite hobbies and activities outside of work?

I love going to the gym and staying active.

What do you always pack?

I always pack the same air fresheners so it feels more like “home” everywhere I go!

Any advice for future travelers?

Just do it. Quit staff nursing. You will not regret it!

What are your go-to ways to relieve stress?

Gym, meditating, and/or margaritas!
