What is your favorite part of travel nursing?
Travel nursing allows me to care for all patients from different areas – it allows me to see, learn, share, and grow while assisting to fill needs in nursing. I love variety and challenges and travel nursing provides both! Travel nursing also allows me to explore areas of the U.S.
What is a place on your bucket list for a travel nursing job?
Alaska is one place I would love to travel nurse. The diversity, challenges, and growth opportunity, as well as the beautiful exploration of such a magnificent area, is a huge desire and goal.
Tell us about your career history – how did you become a travel nurse?
I have a long career history in nursing, along with previous travel nursing, and when the pandemic hit I was a Director of Nursing in a small critical access hospital. As the pandemic continued I knew I wanted to be out assisting in the nursing needs while caring for not only COVID patients yet all patients who were ill. I prayed and discussed with my husband and family and made the decision to return to patient care and start traveling once again- it has been a blessing.
Have you found any sort of community while travel nursing?
Travel nursing is one of unique challenges and I have found a strong community among fellow travel nurses as well as among staff nurses at facilities.
What are some of your favorite hobbies and activities outside of work?
I absolutely love exploring the areas I travel nurse and learn about the community. I am also a photographer and enjoy capturing my experiences. When I am not on assignment I love spending time with my 4 grandbabies, my husband, and my children making memories.
What do you always pack?
I always pick family photos, my bible, journal, and books I am currently reading.
Any advice for future travelers?
My advice is simple: be ready to be solo and experience new and different. One must be strong to travel from home and the comforts it brings and be ready to make a short-term home away from home. It is also important to be willing to learn from the community and support all you encounter.
What are your go-to ways to relieve stress?
Yoga, always yoga – whether on an app or at a facility. Self-care is important.
