As a dialysis technician, you will operate and maintain the equipment needed to replace the functions of a normal kidney, filtering blood. Patients that require the use of a dialysis machine do so because of severe kidney failure or renal disease. A physician will supervise you, and you will also deal with and interact with patients during every step of the dialysis procedure.
Dialysis techs, also known as nephrology technicians or hemodialysis technicians, must get patients ready for dialysis, measure their vital signs, weigh them, test their blood for waste and chemicals, and operate and supervise the hemodialysis machine while it filters the patient’s blood. The patient requires constant observation and you must report to the doctor or nurse any complication or issue that might arise. Another responsibility is the relationship with the patient, as the dialysis technician will have to explain the process to them and provide any comfort when needed.
In-home dialysis machines are increasingly becoming more and more common, providing more opportunities for dialysis technicians. Positions are available in hospitals, clinics, and even in large medical centers and academic labs, but also in private residences where it is increasingly common to have in-home dialysis machines. Patients must be instructed also on the use of an in-home dialysis system when that’s the case.
